A pouch for rice made of a piece of tofu that has been deep-fried and cut in half to form a pocket. Inarizushi is named after the Japanese deity Inari, who is associated with a great love of tofu. The pouches are brown colored, their flavor is moderately sweet and they come canned with a liquid that needs to be filtered before they are filled. In Japan it is common practice to fill inarizushi with rice alone, but in the West they are often filled with additional ingredients as well, such as fresh, cooked or pickled vegetables as well as raw fish.
